House edge

The share of each stake the operator expects to keep over the long run, and the mathematical complement of return to player. A game with a return to player of ninety six per cent carries a house edge of four per cent.

What it means for an operator

The number is theoretical. What an operator actually keeps is the hold, and the two differ because of player behaviour, bonus costs, promotional spend and volatility.

Treat house edge as an input to planning rather than a forecast. The figure that pays the bills is gross gaming revenue after bonus cost, which is why the bonus engine matters as much as the game mix.
