Most teams celebrate launch day. Cake, champagne, a Slack thread full of party emojis. Then Monday comes, and nobody has a plan for what happens next.

The uncomfortable truth about software is that shipping the first version is the easy part. The product is clean, the dependencies are fresh, the user base is small. Everything works because nothing has been stressed yet. Give it six months. That is when reality arrives.

The first thing that breaks is visibility. Unless you set up proper monitoring before launch, you are flying blind the moment real users show up. Error tracking tools like Sentry, application performance monitoring through Datadog or New Relic, structured logging that actually tells you what happened and why. These are not optional extras. They are how you find out your payment flow fails on Safari before your users tell you on Twitter.

Bug triage sounds simple until you have forty open issues and a team of three. Not every bug is urgent. Not every bug is even a bug. Some are misunderstood features, some are edge cases affecting one user on an old Android phone, and some are silent data corruption that will cost you months if you ignore it. You need a system for prioritization, and that system needs someone with enough context to make the calls. When maintenance gets handed off to whoever is free, critical issues get buried under cosmetic fixes.

Dependency updates are the most neglected aspect of post-launch life. Every package in your stack is evolving. Security patches, breaking changes, deprecated APIs. Ignoring them feels fine for a while. Then you need to update one library and discover it requires a newer version of your framework, which requires a newer version of your runtime, and now you are looking at a two-week migration instead of a two-hour update. Teams that update dependencies monthly spend a fraction of the time compared to teams that wait a year and face a cascading upgrade nightmare.

Performance does not stay constant. It degrades. Databases accumulate data, queries that were fast with ten thousand rows crawl with ten million. Caches fill up and eviction policies you never configured start dropping the wrong entries. Third-party APIs you depend on change their rate limits or response times. Memory leaks that were invisible at low traffic become real problems at scale. Performance monitoring is not a one-time setup. It is an ongoing practice, and it requires periodic profiling, load testing against production-like data volumes, and someone paying attention to trends before they become outages.

User feedback loops are where maintenance meets product evolution. The distinction matters. Maintenance keeps the software running as intended. Evolution changes what intended means. A login bug is maintenance. Adding social authentication because users keep requesting it is evolution. Both cost time and money, but they draw from different budgets and require different decision-making processes. Conflating them is how teams end up building new features on top of broken foundations, or refusing to improve anything because we are in maintenance mode.

The reason maintenance budgets get cut first is psychological, not rational. New features are visible. They generate excitement. You can put them in a pitch deck. Maintenance is invisible when done well and catastrophic when neglected. Nobody gets promoted for keeping the build green and the dependencies current. But the cost of deferred maintenance compounds in the same way financial debt does. Each month you skip, the eventual bill grows. And unlike financial debt, technical maintenance debt does not come with predictable interest rates. It shows up as a security breach at 2 AM or a failed deployment that blocks your biggest feature launch.

There is a threshold where maintenance becomes unsustainable if neglected too long. Past that point, it is cheaper to rewrite than to fix. We have seen codebases where the effort to update a three-year-old Node.js application to a supported version exceeded the effort to rebuild the core functionality from scratch in a modern stack. That is not an engineering failure. It is a business decision that was made by default when nobody allocated maintenance resources.

The practical answer is straightforward. Dedicate a fixed percentage of your engineering capacity to maintenance, somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five percent depending on the maturity of the product. Automate what you can: dependency scanning with tools like Dependabot or Renovate, automated test suites that catch regressions, alerting pipelines that notify on-call engineers before users notice. For everything you cannot automate, build a rhythm. Monthly dependency reviews, quarterly performance audits, regular triage of the backlog. Make maintenance a scheduled activity, not an afterthought triggered by emergencies.

The software you launch is not the software your users will be using in a year. It will be slower, more fragile, and running on outdated dependencies unless someone is actively keeping it healthy. Plan for that from day one, or plan to deal with it as a crisis later. Those are the only two options.
